Klagenfurt am Wörthersee

WELCOME TO KLAGENFURT

You have chosen Klagenfurt am Wörthersee as your holiday destination – a warm welcome to our city! Experience the most beautiful days of the year in a city which is so lively and varied that it will immediately cast its spell over you.

The memories of the “Rose of Lake Wörthersee”, as Klagenfurt is also known, will stay with you for a long time…

No matter how long your holiday is, it will definitely be too short.

Klagenfurt provides you with an almost infinite range of activities –

at any time of the year.

Among these are numerous sporting activities and cultural events, entertaining shopping tours, castle trips and discovery tours in the charming old town.

The great location at Lake Wörthersee, one of the largest and warmest alpine lakes in Europe, makes Klagenfurt a popular holiday destination. In summer, a large number of possibilities to participate in sports is offered: all sorts of water sports, volleyball right by the lake, running on the wonderful half marathon route, tennis, golf, cycling and a whole lot more. You can be sure that the right thing for you is definitely included.
The Provincial Capital of Klagenfurt has been twice awarded with the Austrian Event Award. Among the contributors to this were the Beach Volleyball Grand Slam Tournament at the lakeside lido and the Carinthia Ironman Austria. Speaking of culture, worth mentioning is the Ingeborg Bachmann Literature Prize which is well known in the German-speaking area, as well as the Wörthersee Festival with musical performances on the open-air stage which floats on Lake Wörthersee.
In winter time, Klagenfurt presents itself from its most charming side. At the beginning of December, the Christmas Market turns the old town into a romantic Christmas dream. The streets and lanes are decorated with loving care, and the smell of mulled wine and Advent cookies is in the air. Also the turn of the year is celebrated particularly exuberantly: already in the afternoon of the last day of the year the New Year’s Eve Carnival begins with high spirits, fun and a spectacular live programme.
Sport enthusiasts can enjoy extraordinary luxury in winter: skiing and snowboarding right in town, at the “Schleppe Alm”, five minutes from the city centre; and once Lake Wörthersee freezes over, the largest natural ice-skating area in Europe is available for your enjoyment.

Klagenfurt is not only a lively city, but also a very historical town: predominantly Italian master builders have determined the appearance of the historic old town. Discover magnificent Renaissance buildings, facades renovated true to the original style and shady arcaded inner courtyards on a stroll through the old town; see the beauty of the sacral buildings on a church walk; or visit one of the many museums, castles and galleries.
We recommend bringing the day to a close with a delicious dinner, enjoying local or international cuisine. Try traditional Carinthian dishes such as “Kasnudel” (pastry cases filled with curd cheese) or “Ritschert” (a casserole made of barley). In Klagenfurt you will find numerous excellent inns and restaurants which offer these specialities.
This city will definitely let you know that you are holidaying in one of the most charming and animated places in Europe.
